The English major is one of the largest in UNT's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. It is widely recognized as a foundational liberal arts degree, preparing students not only for graduate study in literature or creative writing, but for a range of careers - including teaching, the law, publishing, and business - in which the skills of analytical thinking and effective communication are at a premium. Whatever path they choose, English majors (and minors) will also have gained something invaluable: a fuller sense of the possibilities of life, expanded intellectual and imaginative horizons, and a greater capacity for understanding both themselves and others.
At all levels, our class sizes are restricted in order to provide opportunities for collaboration with other students and close interaction with professors. Our faculty hail from the top graduate programs in the country, are active scholars and researchers, and are consistently recognized as some of the best teachers at UNT. They specialize in a variety of literary traditions, critical methodologies, and genres of creative writing, and are devoted to training students in the most effective strategies of reading and writing.
