Placing out of Hours
Students who wish to learn more about credit by examination, advanced placement, and international baccalaureate should visit http://www.unt.edu/credit.
NOTE: The University of North Texas English Department does not accept CLEP test scores to place out of English course hours.
International Students
Students whose first language is not English must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before they can enroll in Freshman Writing courses. For passing scores, visit http://www.unt.edu/askunt/, click on "International Students & Admissions," and select the question regarding TOEFL scores you want answered.
The Intensive English Language Institute is for international students who need to learn English before they can enroll in Freshman Writing courses. Students who graduate from this program do not have to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to take other courses at UNT.
However, students may still need to improve their writing skills in English to receive credit in a College Writing course. Students may enroll in ENGL 1200 Developmental Writing for more practice in grammar, sentence structure, and paragraph construction. ENGL 1200 does not satisfy core curriculum requirements.
Students may also enroll in ENGL 1312, an equivalent of ENGL 1310, for international students.
