Education:
Dr. Richard Joines' academic specialties include in American literature, literary criticism, and pragmatism. His writing focuses on Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Wallace Stevens, William James, John Dewey, and Richard Rorty. His essay "On the Something There Is," on Robert Frost's "Mending Wall," nature, poetry, and pragmatism appears in Erraticus. He has published creative nonfiction with River Teeth's "Beautiful Things" and in 3Elements. His poems have appeared in The Wallace Stevens Journal, The Southern Poetry Anthology, Quarterly West, Appalachian Heritage, Birmingham Review, Tusculum Review, New South, Dappled Things, and in a chapbook, Parádeisos. Reviews and other critical essays have been published by The Wallace Stevens Journal, Contemporary Poetry Review, The Critical Flame, The Rumpus, American Literary Review, Bryn Mawr Classical Review, Southern Humanities Review, Cultural Logic, the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism, the Mississippi Encyclopedia, A Companion to 20th Century American Poetry, and The Free Jazz Collective. He was an NEH summer fellow at "Ralph Waldo Emerson @ 200: Literature, Philosophy, Democracy," a DAAD fellow at the German Studies Seminar "Nietzsche and Heidegger: The Question of Esoteric Political Philosophy," and a recipient of creative writing residencies at Blue Mountain Center and the Lillian E. Smith Center. He is member of the Wallace Stevens Society, the Richard Rorty Society, and is Book Reviews Editor for William James Studies.
