Undergraduate Scholarships (Deadline: March 1, 2024)

The deadline for 2024-2025 scholarship applications is no later than 5:00 PM Friday, March 1st, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.

Download our Undergraduate Scholarship Application HERE. You must submit this application along with all other required materials (see the checklist!) by Friday, March 1st, 2024 to English@unt.edu in order to be considered for an undergraduate scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Available scholarships:

Ernest S. Clifton Memorial Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all undergraduate English majors (including incoming freshmen)
  • Based on:
    • academic performance in English courses
    • overall academic performance
    • cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non-academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples

Arthur Sampley Memorial Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all junior and senior English majors with at least one semester of work completed at UNT
  • Based on excellence in an original piece of only one of the following:
    • fiction
    • poetry
    • drama
    • personal essay

English Department Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all junior and senior English majors with at least one semester of work completed at UNT
  • Based on:
    • academic performance in college English courses
    • overall academic performance
    • cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples

Mary E. Whitten Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all undergraduate English majors who are native Texans
  • Based on overall academic performance and cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples

Imogene Bentley Dickey Mohat Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all undergraduate English majors
  • Based on overall academic performance and cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples
  • Recipient must be registered for at least 15 semester hours at the time any part of the scholarship is received

Mary Patchell Scholarships (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarships
  • For undergraduate English majors
  • Require a minimum GPA of 3.5 for English courses
  • Minimum of 12 completed hours (or the equivalent) of college English courses required and cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples
  • Recipient must be registered for at least 15 semester hours at the time any part of the scholarship is received

Burlage Family Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all undergraduate English majors
  • Based on overall academic performance and cover letter describing any honors and activities (both academic and non academic) that show your high level of responsibility and commitment to literary studies and/or writing. Letter should include specific examples
  • Recipient must be registered for at least 15 semester hours at the time any part of the scholarship is received

Veta Watson Percy Scholarship ($1,000)

  • One-semester scholarship
  • Open to undergraduate English majors who have financial need
  • Requires a minimum GPA of 3.0, a minimum enrollment of 12 hours, and qualification for financial aid

The Jawdat Haydar Poetry Prize ($200)

  • Open to all undergraduate English majors.
  • The award will recognize excellence in a selection of three original poems.
  • Judging for the prize will be carried out by the department's poetry faculty.
  • Submit three poems as a single PDF.

The Robert and Marjorie Hirsch Scholarship (Amount varies)

  • One-year scholarship
  • Open to all undergraduate English majors
  • Requires a minimum GPA of 2.5, a minimum enrollment of 12 hours
